Carrabell - 9/6/08 - NFGFC Tournament w/ Snatch and Brandon

Post by caseycook »

Called Snatch at 3:53 a.m. on Saturday morning and woke him up. We met at my parents’ house, picked up the boat and made the drive to Carrabelle. We checked in with Tin Can and bs’ed with folks for a few minutes. Got to the ramp and at safe light ran the boat to the first hole. Baitfish were not present, there was little wind, and the water was dirty…not a good combination. We all opened up with topwater plugs and within the first five minutes, Brandon boated an 18” fish. I caught our second fish, a 23” 3.22 lb. trout at 7:10 a.m on a Bite-a-Bait topwater that I’d customized / colored with sharpies the night before.

(We were catching fish early and forgot to take the pic when it was caught. After a few hours in the livewell)

Brandon switched to a fluke and he and Pat doubled up a few minutes later with Brandon catching another 18” and Pat hauling in a 15.5”. We finished our limit and had upgraded to a 23”and four 18” trout by 8:10 a.m.

The fishing was dead for the next several hours. We covered lots of water, caught a few small trout, saw a few redfish, but generally didn’t do much. We ran to our final spot of the day at 12:30 and caught fish immediately thereafter. We’d drifted into some deeper water and Snatch was throwing the Skitterwalk (in 8’ of water) when he had a nice hit and boated a fat 18.5” fish which helped us upgrade slightly. We continued drifting and caught several trout, but none that helped. By 2 p.m. the wind had picked up and the waves had increased considerably and so we decided to head in early. We ended up weighing 11 lbs and picked up the victory. It was a long day on the water, but we had a great time.

A few quotes from the day:

Brandon, “Look, it’s a redfish tailing!”
Casey, “Brandon, why would a redfish be tailing in 5 feet of water?”
Pat, “Dude, it’s a shark. Good call, Brandon.”

Brandon misses a few fish in a row and starts to pout, Pat says, “Brandon, you just won the Presentation Award. I guess you think that catching them takes all the fun out of it. Did you just intentionally dull your hooks down to see how many bites you could get?”
Brandon (missing the joke), “No, I swear, the lure was new when I took it out of the package!”
Boom goes the dynamite.
