Hackle

Question for you fly tyers. On a lot of these various redfish flies, the creators use palmered hackle.. I've been trying to duplicate these for some time. The only hackle I have at this time is strung neck hackle in several patters. i.e. the little packs that cost 1.95 ea and the feathers are 4" and shorter. Do most of you have an inventory of the grade one Metz or Whiting necks that cost 65 bucks each or what do most of you use on patterns such as the ones that are popular for reds ? Usually takes about three or four of these short feathers to cover a #1 hook .

I use Schlappen for collars. It is a lot "webbier" and more full than regular saddle hackles. You can also use "saltwater saddle hackles" which are longer and good for palmering if you want to cover a lot of hook.

The most I have ever paid is $20 for a grizzly cape...Been tying for a couple of years and I have yet to use a whole pack of feathers.
