Econfina - October 18 Report

Post by big bend gyrene »

Didn't take time to charge digital camera battery so no pics today, but will share info from todays report for whatever it's worth...

Met Sharkman this morning 7:00am sharp at Econfina landing. Quickly ran out before the tide dropped too low... we had wanted to try offshore but winds were pretty strong early so we cruised grounds east of the landing. Tried drifting for trout from 2.5' to as deep as 8', with most caught between 5' and 6'. We didn't slaughter them, but did catch somewhere around 8 nice trout with most keeper size (threw them back for anyone wanting to chase 'em).

Highlight of the day was Sharkman catching a small but fun sized grouper (couple of pounds) on flyrod :smt103  Sharkman also caught the big fish of the day with a very nice keeper red (let him go too, as we didn't take ice out today).

Only fish kept was a nice 14" flounder caught on... new penny colored secret weapon 8) Kept it on a stringer most of the day, and eating it as I type this report

Not most productive day we've ever had but far from the worst... tally at end of day:

- 8 or so keeper sized trout
- 4 lizard fish (I had the hot "lizard fish" hand :smt011 )
- 2 inshore grouper, with 1 on fly
- 2 fat cats
- 1 red
- 1 flounder
- 1 rock bass
- and just as FYI, pretty sure we lost a few macks with fast cutoffs but none hooked...

YEA SUBER, I THINK THE MOON HAS A LOT TO DO WITH NOT CATCHIN SALTWATER FISH, I HAVE NEVER CAUGHT MANY WITHIN 4 DAYS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FULL MOON. LOOKS LIKE YA HAD ABOUT THE SAME LUCK WE HAD TUES., JUST ENOUGH TO GREASE THE PAN. :smt006 :smt006

Thanks FUTCHCAIRO, Ron, and Flint River Pirate.

Not sure how to take Suber's comment, "Not bad for a Marine"? ... sounds like something a "squidly diddly" might say
