Replacing treble hooks

Post by Redbelly »

My skitterwalks, mirrorlures, and other plugs are needing some hooks replaced. Rusting up.

Where do you get saltwater treble hooks? What size is on a standard 3-4" plug?

Thanks.

I think somebody posted a site on here some time back that listed the various sizes and models of hooks for different lures...

I go back with Gamagotsu(sp?) 2 on my Top Dogs
When you change out the hooks you may want to invest in new split rings, as well.

i go to boaters world and get penn saltwater hooks in red. they last ok. they dont rust, but they will corrode so you gotta throw them in the cooler for the trip home to wash them off. most of the hooks you want are 4's or 6's. i think skitterwalks are 2's.

and that site excited me.... then let me down by being totally useless. it doesnt do anything.

Sorry about that. It was great but it looks like they shut down the links to each lure company. It used to be that they would post the original hook sizes cross referenced to a bunch of other hook manufacturers. Looks like you gotta buy the information now. :-?
I'm sure it's out there somewhere & I'm gonna hunt.
One trouble we have locally is that it's tough to find a decent selection of split rings (Spro) & treble hooks at a store. If I knew where to go then I'd say to carry a few plugs to a store to compare.

I heard Crums has the hooks. I think I will fix a jug to carry on the boat with some saltaway in it. Just drop the plug in after use, dip in to reuse it. Store till you get home and rinse off, might just work.

The internet wayback machine is your friend. Use this link instead. It has all the PDF links intact.

You'll have to cut and paste the link yourself.

Actually, I decided to cut out the middle man and download all the PDFs and put them somewhere easier to get to.

Here is the new link that has all the Brand PDF's. Just click the one you want.

Go to South Georgia Outdoors, if they don't have then they'll get it.

I recommend you get some of the (Split Ring) pliers with the Trout tooth on the end. Its used to open up those split rings and makes hook changes a lot easier. Some of the Rapala and other brands have multi function pliers and that tooth thing is used for the split rings. Use em.
