Keaton Beach Nov 14-16/08

Post by Breambuster »

The secret about coming home with a good catch is to bring along a good crew, and on this trip with Don, Todd, Dave and myself, we sure had a great crew onboard.

On Friday, we started the day with Todd went 0 for 5 on hookups :hammer: . The thing about cork fishing is that you dont set the hook until you feel the fish. Good thing we have Dave to keep the morale high while the "rookies" were in training, putting several keepers in the box including this nice 23''.
Image

As the morning progresses, our apprentice were busy at work, catching blues and lizardfish.
Image

Alas, by mid morning, they ever so slowly making their way up from junk fish to short trout. At least they're now catching the right species.
Image

Soon after they get the hang of just reel until the drag sings instead of setting the hook, they were putting keeper fish on the boat. Here's Don with a nice one:
Image

Its good enough to eat
Image

Todd follow suite with a hook up
Image

Not a big one but its a keeper
Image

Don's turn to hook up again, but the drag didnt stop singing on this one.
Image

This one didnt feel a trout. Who has the net?????? As always, Dave to the rescue (I was too busy taking pictures)
Image

The end results. Nice one Don!
Image

In between giving instructions, directing traffic on the boat, unhooking fish, catching bait, deciding where to go next, taking pictures, and the list goes on.............. I managed to catch a fish.
Image

We headed in at sunset with a limited of trout plus 3 bonus redfish and a handful of seabass.
Image

On Saturday, Dave again started the day throwing gulp and right away catching a gulp size fish. :-D Note the size of the fish with respect the the 4'' gulp
Image

To his credit, he also caught some nice trout and this nice red.
Image

By now, Don and Todd were neck to neck with Dave in the catching department. Here's a nice one from Todd.
Image

Todd waiting patiently for the big bite.
Image

and rewarded with the biggest fish for the trip
Image

That a fat 24+''. Good job Todd.
Image

As usual, Dave also pulled in a nice 24'' fish. Though this one was not as fat as Todd's fish, its a great catch nonetheless.
Image

Don didnt do as well on the trout compartment but did catch the surprised fish for the trip.
Image

That's the biggest flounder I ever seen in Keaton area.
Image

Again, we were on the water until right after sunset, heading in with an identitical results as Friday except with a much better quality fish and a bonus flounder.
Image

Its was just Dave and I on Sunday. You cant ask for more drastic changes between Sunday evening and Sunday morning. We were greeted with 20 knots NE wind, and 15 and 10 degrees drop in the air and water temp, respectively. So, anyone knows what would you get from negative tide and 20 knots NE wind???

This

and this

and this (there goes my shortcut route)
Image

and this also
Image

We have heard people say you can always get out from the KB channel even during very low tide. Well I wouldnt bet my money on it knowing what I know now. This pict was taken right in front of the no wake zone. :eek3: I told Dave no way I would go out on this little water.
Image

But the trout were calling out there. On the way out
Image

Looking back at the shore

another shot, from a different angle
Image

what lays ahead
Image

We made it to marker #1 with 2-4' of water most of the way inside the channel. But as soon as we went past Marker #1 we hit ground. :smt104 With the lower unit tilted as far up as it could go, we made it out to deeper water. The short version of this story is that we fished expecting to not catch anything at all but we found some trout holding in a deep grass flats no bigger than half a football field and managed put 7 keepers in less than an hour before calling it a day.

One last picture, of Don the pellican (its an inside joke).
Image

Hope ya'll enjoyed the pictures as much as I did put them together.

Dave caught a few using gulp and hard bait but most of the larger fish and reds were caught on pinfish. Dave and I were throwing top water plugs for a while in the morning, had plenty of hits but no hook up. I think I came closer to hooking my buddy with the top water plug than the trout. :-D

Guys, my boat can only take 2 comforatbly 4 max, but will post here if I have spot open. Perhaps we can meet in Keaton and we can buddy boat out there. Probably not until next spring through as there's not enough daylight now to go down just for a day trip. It's going to be crappie fishing from now until march. Look out crappie in Blackshear.
