Changing props question...

Post by Atticus »

How tight on the crown nut before you put the cotter pin through the whole assembly? I have to replace one.

I bounced off of something in 6' of water yesterday. Looked at the wake and didn't see anything. Felt a vibration after I was comming down from being on plane 10min later. Can't even find where it happened on my GPS. Didn't bang or crunch like a rock. Felt more like an odd hop. I convinced myself it was just a wierd wave in the chop until I slowed down and felt the vibration. Maybe something submerged like a 2x4? Guess I will never know.

Atticus, where did you launch? Others on the board may be able to help you identify some difficult to spot objects.

For all fishing out of Econfina, sure everyone knows that when Dennis tore up bird racks in the area it pushed the "pyramid" one closer to the mouth but don't know if everyone is aware it also sent some debris a bit more due south of the mouth that is extremely tough to see... been SOOO long since I went out this year, but if memory serves me well it seems like one of the storms we got this year moved things around just a bit yet again  Don't have my GPS on me at the moment, but I'll try posting later if I can remember to do so when I've got my GPS...

I was running the steakline (bouyline) from St. Marks towards Aucilla about 50-100' South of the bouyline about half way in between the birdrack and gamble point light. Depthfinder said 6'. I was headed East to look at spots during low tide. I know there are rocks in the area (generally the Peters Rock area) but, even with the low water yesterday, I would be shocked if I nailed one that deep. Also - I have hit rocks before and this didn't feel like a rock. Felt like a wired hop the whole boat took. I turned around to look at the wake (nothing came up). There is a mark on the prop where it is bent too. Doesn't look like a rock's markings. Rocks usually leave burrs and scrapes on my props. This looks like the prop took a bite into something. Wierd.

Should I just crank down on this castle nut or is there a specific way to do it? I have a big breaker bar torque wrench but I don't know how much I should be leaning into this thing.

Atticus,
I did the same dang thing in April in I think the same general area. It didn't damage the prop but took a hunk outta my skeg. I was running about 6' as well. I guess there be monsters all over.

Atticus, if you have a torque wrench, put 50 lb of torque on it. If the hole isn't lined up, tighten more until it lines up.
What was I supposed to do today?
