Wakulla Beach 1/25

Post by Charles »

Launched the canoe at noon with my daughter (7). Had some concern about competition after seeing all the cars and trucks in the parking area. Saw a few kayaks around the outer 'bars as we paddled around and went up Graves Creek. Met a fella' coming out of the creek in a canoe with an electric motor. He said he hadn't done anything, but he also hadn't seen anybody else in that creek. Which sounded promising. Picked up a 25" red on the very first oysterbar we stopped for at 12:30.

"Oh, yeah. This is gonna' be another banner day."
:smt043 So much for my prognosticating. :smt043

We tried hole after hole where I have caught fish before, and some new areas (to me) that I found last weekend when the water was so low and clear. We didn't do anything at all after that for four hours. Until I missed another strike, and that fish wouldn't come back at all, for anything. But I think it was slooow for everybody. Talked to two guys in a jonboat on our way back out of Graves. They hadn't done anything, but they had just arrived not long before. Overheard two guys in kayaks talking in East Goose Creek. One had a red, the other had a trout and lost a red, and his landing net. Spoke with a couple in a canoe that arrived back at Wakulla Beach shortly before we did. They saw reds, but didn't do anything at all for catching.

So with our one on a white, soft plastic jerkbait, and one missed strike, I guess we didn't really do too bad. At least we didn't get rained on until we were in the car and on the way home.

Sounds fun, and I've been talking with a few people saying they have been seeing big schools of huge reds but were unable to get them to bite. However, one fellars persistence paid off and he landed a huge Black Drum. I wonder if others may be pitching to these big Black Drum. This guy caught his on a big 3/8 Capt Mike Green Spoon. Good meeting you and your Dad Charles on Friday at Wilderness Way.

I guess it's just too cold. Might as well wait for springtime.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.
