St. Marks 1-27-09
I went east of the lighthouse to the rocks off palmetto island. Perfectly calm and clear. But saw no fish on the flats. I was getting bored during the drift and started pitching to stingrays. FYI, they won't eat a brined shrimp even when they are on top of it. OK, no action there so headed to entrance to Stoney Bayou. Pitched brined shrimp to a small school of sheephead. They won't eat those either. I looked down at the rocks and noticed a dormant 8' aligator laying on the bottom in 5 foot of water with saltwater flowing over it. Ended up with only two keeper trout. I only saw one red (about 20") and I saw it in 2' of water as i motored to a different hole. I couldn't believe he didn't scat as i ran past him with the big motor running. I could've reached out grabbed him. Overall, perfect day on the water, just no good fish to report. Only saw a couple other boats all day... it was so tranquil. No bugs. Broke the tip off one rod. That made my fish about $50 a lb. FWC was checking boats that were coming into the Lighthouse. They were checking at the fort the last time I went out. Make sure you're legal. And go get a new tag for your trailer... it's only $17 to $29 a year in Florida. Beats the $91 ticket i got from FHP last time which made my fish worth $91 a pound. This is an expensive sport. But i'm a junkie.

Glad you got out.But sounds like some of my trips. I guess it's like a gambling addiction ,when you hit sometimes you tend to forget about the misses.

You did better than me i fished the st marks river sunday and couldnt catch anything. I saw some reds but i couldnt get them to eat. Saturday i went late to work out some kinks in the new boat and brought a rod. I tossed a gulp in and on the first cast caught a nice trout but had to stop fishing. better luck next weekend..its going to be another cold one

Re: St. Marks 1-27-09
I think if i were going this weekend, I'd stay in the St. Marks river system and not venture to the rock garden or tidal creeks. Or better yet go down to the Fenholloway where they're catching trout, reds and silky jogging shorts.
