Split Rings...Rusty Hooks...Lessons Learned
I've been going through some tackle and weeding out some favorite hard baits that have been neglected big time! I have purchased some bleed'n red hooks #2's and started the process of replacing hooks. I've also noticed that instead of replacing some, especially on Zara Spooks, it looks like the plug may have to be discarded.
The spooks have the little bracket holding the hook instead of an eye and the little screws that hold the bracket are nearly rusted off. One good red would most likely remove the hook for me.
Any way... the reason for this thread is this....when replacing hooks, that are attached via split rings, has anyone found an easy way to remove the old hook and replace with a new one without loosing one's composer? It's hard to believe when looking around my shop and garage that I do not own a pair of split ring pliers but I don't and I've never used them. Do they work? The split rings must be better quality material because they don't show signs of rust, just the hooks. I played around with a pair of small needle nose, small straight blade screw driver, small vise grip, Diags (pronounced "dikes"),etc.
and never really found a good method of making the exchange. Worked aprox an hour and a half last night and I believe I managed to get 5 or 6 plugs done. I have the holes in my thumb this morning to prove it. I hope I can make it my routine for future trips on the salt water to have a container of fresh water to put the plugs in if I change one. The problem I have is when I use 4 rigs I have a tendency to put one down and use another one. I ALWAYS wash all my rigs at the end of a trip with warm soapy water and rinse them but obviously I've either missed some that I've removed and placed in my box or just didn't get them washed well enough. In addition, I suspect that if I place one in a box with out washing it the salt that remains on it will start some rust and that may even migrate to one laying next to it that has not even been used. Sorry for this epistle.... Let me know if you have good ideas on replacing hooks and dealing with split rings.

I always used the small blade on my pocket knife to open split rings . a small pair of needle nose pliers helps after you got the ring spread..It is a job...I use the Mustad 3560 series of hook to replace the old ones with..I ordered several boxes from size 6 thru 1/0. These are plated 2X.
Since I started washing everything I fish with when I get home in hot soapy water and letting it dry I dont notice rust as much..I also hit em after they dry with reel magic.
My experience with those red hooks is that salt water does a number on em in a hurry.

I think you answered your own question - buy a pair of slip ring pliers....buy a good pair...the cheap ones work, but the one's a dollar more are better. Once you get the old hook coming out...remove the pliers and put the new hook in behind the old one and you can remove and add a new one at the same time. I will grab the split ring with the pliers and work the hooks around...ezpz
Rust is part of the saltwater game, you can fight it, but it will always win. I have a Plano 3700 full of various sized treble hooks and split rings...I go through and place hooks when its time.
Is it only me? Redline is invisble to fish per the line company...but the red hooks are suppose to indicate blood to the unsuspecting fish...seems contradicting don't you think?

Split ring pliers were made for this job and I use thm as such. I'm a firm believer that if you use the wrong tools for a job then you might as well not do it. They are only 3-4 bucks at Wal-Mart and have made the job alot easier.
On a side note, when I replace rusty hooks I will usually replace the split rings as well.

I use the split ring pliers for the big rings, my fingernail for the small lures
I just open the ring enuff ta get the old hook coming off, then put the new hook right behind it
as you spin them around the ring, the old one is coming off and the new one is going on at the same time

Thanks for the imput so far. Sundown and Chalk.... the reason for the red hooks???...
That's all I could get on short notice. I didn't want to take time to order and when I went shopping.... Super Walmart on the parkway didn't have any thing bigger than a #4....went to West Marine for a new fuel/water separater and figured I get some there....WRONG.... nothing larger than a #4.....went to the new Walmart next to Sportsman's warehouse (SW was closed!
) and they had one box of 20 #2 and they were red. I will say however, in looking through my rust pile that the ones with red hooks did seem to be in better shape but that may be just a querk. Wevans.... I just had my nails done for Valentine's day and didn't want ta mess em up!!

Good pair of split ring pliers is the only safe and sane way to go...saves tons of wounds and mental anguish! They also take up very little room in box.
My life has been simplified dramatically by carrying a spray bottle of saltaway or something like that and spraying down plugs several times during the day
and one last time before returning them to box.

Split ring pliers and VMC or Gamakaysu or Owner hooks.
The VMC are better for topwater lures.
Given you recent fishing expeditions.....why change hooks?

HEY BUD, I ALWAYS HAVE A GAL. BUCKET I PUT ANY PLUGS I CHANGE IN. WHEN I GET HOME I ALWAYS WASH RODS, REELS, AND PLUGS WITH MY PRESSURE WASHER. I USE DAWN DETERGENT. WHEN EVERYTHING DRIES I SPRAY ALL OF THE PLUGS, REELS, HOOKS ETC. WITH WD-40. I HAVE NOT CHANGED A HOOK IN I DO NOT KNOW WHEN. WHEN I DO CHANGE ONE I JUST STICK MY THUMB NAIL IN THE O RING AND START THE BAD HOOK OUT AS I PUT THE NEW ONE IN RIGHT BEHIND IT. WHEN I FINISH GETTING THE OLD HOOK OUT THE NEW ONE IS IN THE O RING.

Scientific research shows red is the first color to lose it's color at depth. The tackle manufacturers are in the business to make money. All fishing tackle is made to catch fishermen. Some products catch more than others. Bought any GULP lately?Chalk wrote: Is it only me? What was I supposed to do today?
