I took the Borski skunk and the Capt. Bowdish's rattle snake and made this lil cocktail.
The rabbit tail is only the length of the hook and I put some marabou and Metz Deadly Dazzle (craft fur and flash mixed) under the tail to support it.
I bought all the materials from http://www.bearsden.com
Materials Used
Hook: Mustad 34007 size 2
Thread: Flat waxed nylon - color dependent (GPS preferred for spinning hair, but use what you have)
Tail: Black marabou, Metz Deadly Dazzle in Misty Black, black rabbit strip - all the length of the hook and a small hourglass rattle
Body: 2 Schlappen feathers in black, Purple and black deer hair
Weed Guard: 30-pound mono - optional
Tying:
Start the black thread at the bend of the hook and wrap enough for a base for the rattle. I place the rattle below the center line of the hook shaft.
Put a drop of superglue on the rattle once in place.
Wrap a small tuff of black marabou on top of the rattle, length of the hook.
Wrap Metz Deadly Dazzle under the rattle on both sides.
I figure eight some wraps over the Metz and marabou to pull it together around the rattle. Also loop some wraps underneath the Metz to hold it up.
Add a hooks length of black rabbit strip in front of the rattle.
Add some superglue.
Tie in the two Schlappen feathers and palmer forward and tie off.
Tie in a hank of purple deer hair - you want the tips to be just short of the Schlappen combed back. Spin it to the bottom of the hook
Place a hank of black deer hair on top of the purple deer hair - hold it in place and wrap. Should have a black top and purple bottom
Do the same thing again, but the hair should be centered and the tips cut off to make a body.
Depending on how much of a hank you get - this may be enough...if it seems short add another hank (a half hank will usually do) on bottom and top.
Whip finish and superglue
Trim it like a toad - triangle head that is tapered on top and bottom. Keep the head boxy to push water.
Spinning hair is the hardest part of this fly and trimming it. I usually use scissors to trim...a razor is quicker, also quicker to screw it up or cut you.
A video on spinning hair will help you tie this fly
