07-Mar-09 Aucilla Report
The morning started out rough for us this morning. Headed out about 6:00. Got to hwy 98 and they turned us away from Aucilla. Said it was to smoky and foggy to travel east. So Dad and I headed west to St. Marks. Neither he nor I had fished out of their before. We put in their and started our way out. After venturing out about 2 miles we were both wondering where in the world to go. Made a quick call to a friend and were informed that they reopened the hwy to Aucilla. So now we have wasted about 1 1/2 hrs.
So after reloading the boat and headed over to familiar waters the day went great. Hitting one of Dads favorite holes we loaded up on our Trout limit with in a hour and a half. Then headed in the creek to find some reds and cast the fly rod a little. No luck with that, but at least the day ended well with a limit of Trout and one Red. Mirror Deans seemed to be the winning lour today. Hope you guys had some luck and your morning didnt start as bad as ours did.

If you hadn't spent 1 1/2 hour trying to get to where you wanted to be then you would've have been where you needed to be.
Thanks for the report.

I would guess that the water was anywhere from 55 to 60 deg. Out of all the excitement I never check the depth..Hit-n-Miss wrote:Nice catch. What was the depth and temp of water where you found fish?

Due to commitments at home I got a late start and did not get to the river until 12:30 with the wife in tow. I stopped at JR's for shrimp but the could not get them due to the closure of hwy 98, got some frozen just to have something. Got out on the river and there were boats up and down but no one catching. After several casts and no luck I went though the cut through headed west. I found a creek I have caught some in before and headed up stream. Way up stream. I caught one 20" red that kept me interested. Then after about a half hour hit the big one. I am fishing with a 6' ultra lite with 20 lb braid and hooked a 26 1/2" red!!! After landing him three casts later a 24" red same setup. (I would send pictures but don't know how.) Stopped in StMarks to see my buddy Ronnie and give him one, home by 6. All in all great day.
