I have a 16' DXL with a 2 stroke 40 hp, front and rear casting decks. It fishes two just fine but three is a crowd. Cruising speed with two people and gear is about 26 mph at 4 to 4,500 RPM (when the water is right). I think... if I had to do it again I would get something with a V hull. The Carolina will get you wet unless you know how to drive it in a chop and even then you'll get sprayed. But it's a great flats/creek boat with a shallow draft and it's paid for :-D .

How many people do you want to take with you? How much do you want to spend? Those little 14ft skiffs with a 25hp are some nice little boats. But I have a buddy with a 19ft DLX and a 60 hp Yamaha and he loves it.

I've got a 17' Sundance skiff with a 2-stroke Merc 60. Had it since 2001 and love it. With two people in the boat she will run 50+ mph. A little cheaper than the Carolina skiff, but same basic boat. Can fish 3 with no problems.

I have the Carolina Skiff 180RG Roll Gunnell. I love it because it takes rough water so well. The ride is a dry one in chop. It also will do some really skinny water. I have floated over some rocks on the flats that I was waiting for the "bump" and just floated right over them. It also turns on a dime, needed when your hat blows off (like mine did last sunday).

It has a double hull and is self bailing. The hull is about 20.5 feet from front to rear.

We also use it to go out to around 20 miles on nice days to get some Grouper.

Not really a "skiff", but nice dual purpose boat. I have had no problems with the boat.

Go with at least 19'. The draft is about the same from 17'-20' but the bigger boat will give you more storage and room to move around. Any skiff, Carolina or Sundance, will be a little wet and a little rough but it'll float in nearly nothing and is well worth the so called short comings.

Ol' JL is proud of how well you've taken care of that boat Dub. He talks about it often.
