Sweetwater Fishing - Lake Barkley, KY

Post by Good Times »

Three inches of snow last Thursday night and cool over the weekend. The weather broke and spring showed itself for the first time yesterday and today. It was 72 degrees with clear blues sky's and a little wind here and there. Water temp was right around 57 all day. Fished from 12:00 to 5:00. Dan and I caught about 40 fish between the two of us today. Large mouth, yellow belly's, and stripers. The shad were just stacked up in places. We had 7 keepers above 3 1/2 pounds with the largest going 5 pounds. We through spinnerbaits, rattle traps, road runners, jigs, jerkbaits and fished a drop shot some. All of the keepers came on crankbaits. Great day on the water.

I fished with Dan all day and didn't realize he had on a Seminoles hat until I saw this picture. That, plus the green shirt had to have been behind this 5 pound sack of sugar.

Wasn't quite prepared for the cabin fever I would develop during the winter. I am glad to have gotten out on the water last week and today. Even though the weather is somewhat schizophrenic, I'm thinking I can get used to the bass fishing. I'm meeting some good fishermen and getting in the groove. I guess in fishing the old adage- "It's not what you know, it's who you know" really rings true. Especially when you are learning a new area. I am looking forward to heading south for spring break to reintroduce myself to Mr. Red and Mr. Trout. I'm sure they've been missing me and need a little quality time. :-D

If you ever want to get on a small creek and try some rainbows with a 3/4 weight, give me a shout! We can head to the back of the farm and kill a 1/2 day easy!

I grew up in KY, and I have to tell you, those are some fine fish, especially for this time of the year! Looks like you have it figured out up there. It's a beautiful state, but I don't know how you can take that weather up there though.
