Ochlocknee River -Thomasville- 3/22

Post by GatorBaiter »

Launched on the Ochlocknee River outside of Thomasville from 0800-1600. Figured to run into some bass/ cats/ brem and hopefully all. Fished shiners top water. Fished shiners on the bottom. Fished minnows top water. Fished minnows on the bottom. Fished bass assassin of every color I had. Fished several top water plugs. Fished in the current. Fished in the flooded trees. Fished in the bay heads. Fished in the deep water. Fished in the shallow water. NOT A SINGLE FRICKIN BITE COULD I BUY!!! I was fustrated by my first outing on the river. Any advice would be appreciated. Anybody had any luck on this section of the river? If so....advice? I wanted to head to the coast but the wave/wind scared me away till next weekend and it would be nice to have a back-up plan. Are there any other good rivers in the area you would reccomend? Thanks!!

Try white spinners, red or black plastic worms. Sometimes a pond worm laid on the bottom will bring them in (bass).

Right now crickets should work good, they have for me this time of year in the past. Worms on the bottom always in da riva!

GB, I was there also on Sat. and didn't catch but 2 cats myself. I've fished there only 5 or 6 times myself but have managed to bring home nice messes of channel and blue cats when I've went down river and anchored above a logjam when the river's a little high. I like to use shrimp or cutbait and cast to the logjam and let the current carry it to the bottom just under the logs. Shoot, I've evened found that Gulps work just fine if you don't have the others! Good luck.

Thanks all...I am thinking I will give the river another try when it's a little lower and my moral is boosted from this visit!

I KNOW A GUY THAT WORKS AT THE CITY THAT FISHES THAT SECTION BUT ONLY AT THE RIGHT TIMES. YOU CAN SEE HIS PICTURE AT THE BAIT SHOP BEFORE THE RIVER HOLDING A 12 LBER. AND I KNOW HE HAS CAUGHT A 13 LBER.

Seen the picture! Good to know they are there...for some reason I don't think right now is the "right time". Of course I've never tried fishing the tree tops before and could be wrong... :-D

Go to USGS.GOV and look at the real time water data for the Ochlocknee River in Thomasville. You'll want to fish it when the water level is from 3-4'. Fish crank baits hard and don't give up. They are there, just too much water right now.
No matter what, it's a good day.
