4/8 Tailin' Reds

Post by FinsNGrins »

I kept close watch for the predicted winds for Wednesday morning hoping to get into some redfish in shallow shallow water. Well for once the weatherman was right and a NNW wind less than 5 made it possible. Strong tides and a full moon also helped. Got to the boat ramp just before sunrise with nobody else there in the 34 degree temperature. Ran east along the flat looking for signs of life and it wasnt before long I started seeing lots of reds pushing wake. So I cut the Go Devil off, put together my 9 weight TFO, tied on K. Mamatey's Redfish slider he gave to me the night before. Not long after I put together my home made stripping basket I looked up and out across the water I started seeing tails pop up EVERYWHERE! and BIG tails at that.
This is what it looked like out there:Image
The water was so shallow my trolling motor couldnt run without hitting bottom so I decided to man up and wade in the chilly water, but surprisingly the water was warmer than the air. I must have counted over 200 scattered tails over 3 hours of slick calm water and had over 50 shots at fish, but had only managed to hook 6 and land 4. I got OWNED by a big daddy after he snapped me off on his 3rd run because my fly line got knotted up around the rod butt, my guess he was probably over 35 inches. Once the tide got higher I followed the fish in my boat and posted up over a sand bar with an olive "Whisper Crab" I attempted to tie based off of NoleFlyFisher's pattern.
