Easter Wknd Econ Report

Post by volguy »

Another great weekend on the Econ and the most important few days of a Christian's life, Easter Time. Had my dad and good friend Mark down for the weekend. Mark had never caught a trout. We changed that. :-D

Friday was windy. That is about all I can report. We got down the usual noonish time and started fishing around 1:30. Mostly redfished but tried for some trout first thing in that new Chocolate Water we now have between the Econ and Aucilla. We caught around 15 or so trout with only one keeper to show after about an hour of fishing and got tired of the shorts and wind and decided to find the reds. We ended up with 10 reds for the afternoon. We had to be in early to cook dinner for the gang, but it was a pretty decent afternoon in some really really tough conditions. Oh yea, and my buddy Mark is now addicted. :smt005

Dad and I got in on the action too.

Saturday I really thought it would be super crowded with the holiday weekend and the tourney, so I decided to head way way east and go exploring in some more salty water. Much to my surprise, there was hardly anyone at the ramp and we really didn't see a lot of folks out in big numbers all day. but, we needed more salinity and so we tried to find the saline solution. :-D I know, that's bad. We found fish right away. The water was much cleaner. However, although almost all the trout we caught were very good trout and we had very few shorts, they were very very scattered just picking up one here and one there. My buddy Mark got his first ever keeper trout.

Fishing in about 6 feet seemed to be the key. As soon as we got within six, we wouldn't get a bite. So after a few hours we started working our way back west. The tied was much higher than predicted with the stiff south wind and we were then finding our fish in 8 to 9 feet all under corks aboutt 5 feet deep and all on chicken bone and electric chicken sea shads. We caught blues, spanish, flounder and a few trout, but still nothing great on the trout. So we decided to head for the reds again. We found a few, but they were spotty and as soon as you caught one, they spooked out the rest of the school. I believe the water had them disoriented and they were just overly spooky. We ended up with 10 more.

And then there was Sunday. Easter Sunday. And it was awesome. East wind and very cool early. We were out early and found fish right way in that 5.5 to 6 foot range. We had a limit of VERY nice trout in 2 hours with a 34 inch Spanish, some nice blues, and black seabass thrown in. We fished corks at 5 feet with anykind of bright chartreuse like the glow sea shad and we were way out for this time of year. Of course the east wind blew the tide out a little more than projected, but man we were way out there for April. We had a 21.5 and a 24 inch trout. All the other keeps were around 18 and 19 inches. We then went in for a quick limit of reds and back at the house to clean up, clean fish and head to the house.

and the cooler full and mess from the weekend. the spanish wouldn't fit in the cooler. :-D

ak, we eat a lot of fish. three of the fish fries i do each year require 250-300 filets per event, so it takes a lot. we leave the skin on about half and grill those. it is not uncommon for us to eat fish 2 to 3 meals per week. we love some fish and seafood. also, usually the guys i take will take about a quarter of the catch each also for themselves.

Dang, you must have changed cars or come down through Alabama, cuz I put out an APB on you after your last trip. Years ago, there was a term for a fisherman like you ... he was either good with dynamite or had a golden horseshoe up his rear. I don't see no marks from explosions, so you must be a golden butt. :smt005

Nize catch!
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
