My wife was planting flowers in the yard yesterday and our new cat Herschel brought her a present. It was alive, so I guess he's into catch and release. Herschel let him go and we found him again today on our front porch. I've never been one to kill snakes because I can usually ID them, and 9 out of 10 times they're harmless.
I can't figure out what kind of snake it is, so any help would be great. He has since been relocated to Millertime's mailbox.

Garter snake. Harmless, unless you're a grasshopper, frog, or a small rodent.

Thanks BD, I've seen them with lighter markings, but that's gotta be what it is.

I don't know there JT51. Could be a spotted garden cobra. They look very similar.

I am fairly certain that this is a specimen of the ever elusive, but extremely deadly family of "rattle mouthed water caucasons". One bite from this little fella, and its good night Irene! Be very careful with these guys.

Here is a handy online guide to snake identification:

And following the guide you find out that your snake is: Peninsula ribbon snake,

I"ve got a neighbor at Anky that would classify him as the most important of two possibilities.....ALIVE!
It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
