Boat wood refinishing

I have an older boston whaler with wood bench seats that need refinishing. Any recommendations for someone to do that? And is there varnish for marine use? Thanks

There is a test of exterior finishes in the June 2009 issue of Fine Woodworking, available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

It looks you get what you pay for. Epifanes Clear Varnish is the only one rated better than "Fair to Good", and it is $45/qt, and needs 7 coats. They show pictures of boards after 1 yr exposure, and the cheaper finishes look like a waste of time.

When I had a little sailboat with some teak trim, I used some stuff called Sikkens Cetol. it was excellent as I recall and highly rated. Google it and you should see some reviews.

If you haven't already tackled this project, I'd highly recommend Bristol finish. It's a poly/epoxy finish that dries quickly so you can apply several coats in a day without sanding between coats. Available in satin or glossy finish.

It's not cheap ($50 a quart), but if you do it right, it'll last several seasons during normal use. You can get it through West Marine, although it might require a special order.
