Rock Island

Well, I usually go on a kyak trip with 5-6 of my buddies in the fall. We pick one of the 3 30 mile stretches of the state owned "trail". Even though its a ton of paddling, we also do a ton of fishing. We decided to do a trip this spring and we are spending 3 days on Rock Island just fishing away. Anyhow, anyone have tips for the area? I know there is the large grass flats to the north near the mouth of the Econfina, but we also have the Fenholloway within a mile of us. Any spots I should stick to? We have a nice pool for the biggest red and one for trout too.

Any tips would be nice. I usually stick to the top-water in the morning and the usual gulps throughout the day. If any of you are out there Fri-Sun and see 5-6 guys in yaks looking like we have been lost at sea for weeks, thats us.

Water was stained pretty bad the other day for reds spinnerbait & bouncing a grub off the bottom was the winner. In Trout it was 6'-7' and a 5' string under a cork with Gulp Grubs also straight jig. Trout were not easy by any means scattered and slow. The Reds were pretty thick on the bars.

I haven't fished there lately, but you picked a good place. Hickory mound is just west of the rock and several friends fish in the creeks there with yaks. Caught and lost biggest trout of my life (28-31inches) there 50 yrds east of the rock using top water. Beware!!! of the sand gnats so bring plenty of 100% deet and that may not stop them from bitting. Good luck and post the results.
