Aucilla 4/23/2009

Post by LuckySOB »

I took two young guys fishing today from Athens that had never been to the flats. Got to the landing to see the fresh water flowing into the Gulf at Mach 1 and new I was up against some tough conditions. We couldn't fish up close early on due to low tide, so we headed out to find some salty water. Finally could taste the salt in about 9-10 ft of water. We used CT and a 48" leader and pulled in 6 Trout with only two of them being keepers 18" and a 19", 3 big sailcats, and 2 ladys. It was rough enough to get both of them a slight shade of green. Decided we would head in close for some smoother water and a chance for them to hook up on a Red. My second or third cast was a Bull on a Capt. Mikes spoon. Got broke off on the Oyster bar :( . About five minutes later, my green looking friend had eyes about to come out of his head. His light tackle was screaming drag and he was all smiles. Put his first Red in the boat at 22". Not a monster but a very nice fish to make you come back for more. Headed in at 12:00 to make it back to work for the afternoon.

Was going to head out to try and bottom fish, but NOAA was wrong once again.

Yall did about like we did on trout yesterday, caught 6 and kept 2. We didn't fish for reds, the wind got up so bad after lunch we left about 2:30. I sure don't like the looks of the water down there right now, looks like root beer. I even tried a root beer colored lure and it didn't help.
