going to St george island plantation for7 days for first week in may. I'm so looking forward to going!
I'll be doing much fishing and exploring st george island surf and bay. but i really want to put in some time fishing Crooked island! I'm thinking about renting a kayak and do some exploring there.. How is the pompano/redfishing around crooked island surf and the lagoon? judging by some pics i was looking at, the beach side looks very shallow and calm with small waves and clear water. are there some good sand bars/flats around crooked island to wade? Can i catch sand fleas there?
is there any chance of encountering tailing pompano or reds in early morning? or any sight fishing opertunities with fly rod? I'm going to put in some serious time and effort on catching pomp on fly. it would be like a dream to me
any kind of advice from the crooked island pros would be very appreciated
thanks
richard
I'm not sure I would qualify as an expert at fishing Crooked Island sound, but I have fished it probably 15 times in the last three years. I do not have any experience with pomps in the surf. The only time I go out of the sound is to try and catch the tarpon that run the cut during the summer.
As far as redfish, I have caught a few back up in the sound, but nothing spectacular. St. Andrews Bay (E. Bay and W. Bay) are far better redfish producers in my opinion. The trout fishing is what is so good in Crooked Island Sound. I have caught some really nice fish, and usually catch a nice limit of fish each trip.
Fish the flats out in the main sound at first light using some topwater then I would recommend moving to the outside edge of the flats using live LY's/white bait free lined during the day. You never know what you will catch in that place using live bait. We have caught sharks, cobia, tarpon, redfish, trout, flounder and the usual trash fish. Nothing more exciting than hooking up on an 80 lb tarpon on 12 lb test line.
If you want to catch some some really big sharks go soak a big bait in the middle of the cut, we have caught bull sharks in years past, and some were really big.
Welcome aboard! It would be courteous of you to invite 10-12 of us to spend the week with you down there and we'd show you our favorite places first hand. Sometimes we're fairly well behaved
and, well..............! We can provide our own linens if you'll take care of the lodging, meals, gas and beer. Such an act of kindness will, in fact, satisfy your forum initiation requirements.
It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

For that matter it is real muddy and nasty from Cedar Key to Texas. I was surprised at how dark St. Joe Bay is. I've not seen it look this dark before.
rhtfish and the gang, come on down. we could hookup, hit some good fishig and then after a day of fishing you could take me on a tour of the local pubs
so still muddy huh.....hmm.. even mexico beach? I may have to stick to sgi. I hope crooked island clears up some. how dose the west end beach look?
