St. Marks 4/30/09

Post by Tail Chaser »

BeeeReady and myself head out of St. Marks around 8:30am, after hitting Jerry's for some shrimp. We were met with pretty stiff winds once we got down the river near the lighthouse, but decided to keep on going since we both thought it was going to die down. We had a tough time making bait (catching pinfish) and went to a few different spots with very little success. We gave up after only getting 3-4 and setup a drift on the east flats in hope of some fat trout. Well after catching a few cats, ladyfish and only one small trout we moved on towards a spoil area near the channel and it was game on for spanish mackeral

We caught a bunch before the bite died down and we tried fishing the bars in the east river with no success at all. After being frustrated at the bars we went over to Stoney Bayou where I hooked up with the fattest red I have ever caught, 27-1/2" and 8.75# on the bogas

I was shocked at the girth on this fish, you couldn't get the grin off my face the rest of the day :-D . We caught several more trout, flounder and a black bass in Stoney before calling it the day around 4pm.

The water temp most of the day was right around 77-78 degrees and still very stained. The winds were still pretty bad most of the day but did calm down some towards the end of the day. The Spanish were mostly caught with live shrimp under a bobber along with the ladyfish. The trout, redfish and flounder were caught with jigs and exudes. What a wonderful day to take off of work. I can't wait to try it again tomorrow.

The red was a beast and was a fun fight, every time he saw the boat he would make a nice run. I think everyone is just jealous of BeeeReady's ladyfish  :smt005
