Keaton Beach, 5/20-5/24

Post by ddb »

Bil B. from PA and NC joined me for our annual fish-fest 5/20-5/23 out of Keaton and Breambuster joined us on 5/24 when the weather got more to his liking. We had a great trip despite the 30 mph winds on Wed. which dropped way down to 20 on Thursday and finally got manageable over the weekend. I was greatly surprised to find the water temp had dropped to 64, considering it had been approaching 80 the last time I had been there several weeks ago. Despite the wind, the water temp, and the constant threat of thunderstorms we picked up some good fish on Wednesday including a nice 22" by Bil

Fishing slowed on Thursday, although we did manage to hook up with a nice cobia which we did a tarpon release boat side :( . By Friday the water temps creaped up to 74 and we were able to find a pretty good topwater bite and pick up some nice trout in 3' of water. When they quite playing on the top waters we switched to plugs and I picked up a fat 25" on a red and white Catch 2000 Jr

Things slowed again on Saturday (to a snails pace), but we did manage to pick up a 29" red on a 5" Sea Shad Blurp out in 4' of water that was released after a quick pic

Sunday fishing was great, may have had something to do with having BB along :D . We picked up a limit of quality trout. Sorry no pics except the exit shot

As always, the folks at the marina were great. Kept us real informed on the weather, which is very nice when the wind is blowing like ti was.

We had our best bites on the falling afternoon tides and picked up fish in everywhere from 2.5 to 8' of water, although we didn't go out deap very often cuz we didn't want to get sea sick  Probably should have stayed through Monday, but the wind wore us out.

Thanks for the compliment, I think (?). But I felt like I was hunting blind most days. We did a lot of searching for the few we got most days. The bite windows appeared to be very small, and mainly on the outgoing. Likely played into the wind coming off of the land.
