Scalloping with a Gheenoe or no boat?

Post by DwayneFisherman »

Is there anywhere around here you can go scalloping without a boat?

I have a gheenoe but I am nervous about taking it out very far. Can anyone recommend a good place I could launch with shallow water and lots of scallops? I do not have an outboard, just a trolling motor.

You can wade out from Hagen's Cove between Keaton and Steinhatchee. There is also a small ramp if you wanted to try the gheenoe.

With the equipment you have, there's no reason you couldn't work the area directly in front and to the East of the lighthouse, either just wading or with your Gheenoe. Also, the Wakula beach area is shallow and accessable from Hwy 98 but not sure about the scallop population. Between just those two, I'd go with the lighthouse area. Some of the other members may have some better suggestions.

Last year you could get them in front of the campground at Keaton. :-D Easy run for trolling moter just launch and go under the bridge.

We used to go to Cape San Blas every year and wade for em off the bay side of the beach, just draging an ice chest or two with us
