HHA Saint Marks 06/13/09

Post by Sir reel »

I wanted to hold off posting so I would have the pictures to include which explains why this has been delayed. After a quick stop at JBT, my wife and I met with our HHA's husband and wife (Dennis and Billie) at Shields at 7am. We saw TC and the Showmen's waiting on their guests as well. Got the boat launched and our folks on board. TC ask which direction we were going to head and I indicated we were gonna head West for our first drift. We made a couple of drifts in 4-5 ft water but didn't have much action. I decided to head South to some new grounds so we took a ride. The water seemed a bit clearer and the water temp which was 82 at the start reached 84.6 before the end of the day. We set up our first drift which was a determined by the South West wind to carry us over some sandy patches. I had our guests set up with CT's and electric chicken gulps. I was busy for a while keeping everybody rigged up but eventually had a chance to pitch a plain jig with a soft bait out ahead of our drift. I tried to target the edges of the sand just a couple of feet back in the grass lines. It wasn't long before I had a keeper trout on the way to the boat and when he got close I saw a fish of equal length running right along side of him. At first I thought it was another trout trying to take the jig from him but when I got the fish in the boat I realized that it was a very small but determined shark. He had been run'n along side trying to take a bite out of my trout all the way to the boat. He did manage to get one pretty good bite out of the tail but left me enough to measure a legal fish :smt005 We continued to catch trout, although they were fairly scattered, for another 1/2 hour before the slack tide came on. The wind had died down some and we decided to head out further to some close rocks with the idea that maybe we could find some rock bass. We made the trip but by the time we got to 17ft of water, the wind had decided to switch directions to a more Southerly direction and picked up a bit. We were only able to find a lone remora out there and my wife had something take her bait on a small spinning outfit and rock her up (8lb test and 20lb floro leader). We put the rod in a holder and left it for a while until we saw the line moving around. When we picked up the rod but what ever was on would go back into the rock and the rig was too light to get it up off the bottom. This went on for 2 or 3 more times until we finally just broke it off.
By this time, both the wind and the rollers had increased so we decided to head in closer to shore. I took a North East route to some flats that had produced in the past and Dennis's first cast resulted in a fairly nice yellow tail jack that disconnected just outside of the out streached net  We did not have much more activity and with the conditions getting worse...actually they got down right ugly!, we headed in. With the rollers running parallel to our route back we took a good bit of spray but made it slowly into the river. In all the day was good. Dennis and Billie enjoyed the time. Fishing, Driving the boat, some Catch'n , Ham Sandwiches, Some friendly dig's from time to time....we're ready for next year. We caught several sail cats, the always jumpy lady fish, a couple of small sharks , 5 or 6 short trout and 6 nice keepers for them to take home. Here's a few pictures of our crew.Image

You should invite your folks to tournament day so that you can get on the board.
