cobalt blue, crystal clear water that pelagic fish like to live in.

Then considering a Sailfish has been caught within 9 miles......9 miles.
Tom Keels can tell you how far out to get 50' visibility, but I don't think you ever get crystal clear in the Gulf like you do in the Bahamas!

We have been out 12-15 miles from Econfina and the water is beautiful out there. But like KNot Tester said it doesn't look like the Carribean.

I went out 90 miles out of econfina once and caught a nice tuna but we were only in 106- 118 feet . It was a blue bird day and only a ripple . It was quite an experience but wouldn't repeat unless same conditions present. That is a long way to travel in iffy weather. I guess you could say it was blue water!

It really all depends on a lot of different conditions. I've seen turd brown water in 1,000+' and beautiful cobalt blue water in 100' in the gulf. Best bet is to check sat imagery for true color, clarity, and temps before you go. But to answer your question 60 or so miles SW out of Carrabelle will usually do it.

thanks bad company, that's the type of answer I was looking for.......I realize it's influenced by a multitude of factors, I was kinda looking for a "what's typical" during summer fishing months as far as distance to getting out of green, monkey snot water. I've been 40 miles out of Sykes cut and seen the prettiest water possible, but, like you said, I've been out 80 miles and seen pea soup. And as far as the carribean water comments go.......inshore, clear blue water was not what I was referring to......I was referring to deep, offshore water.....doesn't matter what ocean, gulf or sea you're in.....it's the same. thanks for the replies
