July Tourney

Post by Reel Cowboy »

Launched around 7:00 at Econfina and made it to the Gulf (and nasty looking skies). Our first area which had produced fish the last few tournaments and trips, was a short ride towards those same eerie skies.
My first cast of the day was, with a new top water bait tied on a new rod, rewarded with 4 boils and blow ups but no fish. No matter, there were fish there and it was just an issue of letting my hooks met their mouths. After 3-4 or casts with more boils and explosions we finally landed the culprit, a 1.5# lady fish with all 3 trebles sunk in her. I got her unhooked and released and went back to fishing. I landed the fattest 14" trout I've ever seen, she weighed almost 2.25# & looked like a football. Christy hit the front deck to fish and I heard "THUD!!", followed by, "I broke my foot!!". She had slipped on the fish box lid and somehow the big toe on her left foot touched her right ear and the right foot was all twisted up under her. A quick examination determined that the foot was in fact not broken nor even swollen. It was 10:30.
Fast forward a little while we had the IPod out and had pretty well said to heck with this. I finally caught a 12" rock bass and I don't know if I had ever been so happy to see a keeper fish of any kind.
12:00, Christy puts us on the board with a 15 1/2" trout. I throw a jig out behind the boat and about the time I stuck the butt in the rod holder the drag lit off and aboard came a 19" fatty trout. It was looking better. Christy added another 16" trout and it was time to go.

Tally for the day:
(3) Short Trout
(3) Keeper Trout
(4) Rock bass
(2) Sharks
(1) Ladyfish
(2) sets of sunglass tan lines

We made it to Jerry's and weighed our bag.
Home around 6:00 & beer #1 by 6:01.
All in all it was a decent day

Thanks to CC and Pat for a great tourney and the sponsors for the raffle prizes.
