Fort Desoto Snook

Post by welladjusted »

I have to be down in St. Pete this weekend and we will be at Ft Desoto on Saturday and some of Sunday. I have never caught a snook before but have heard they aren't too hard to come by fishing along the shores at the beach. Anybody been there before and want to offer some advice? I'll be using artificials. Thanks!

I fished a couple hours south in Naples last week. The beaches were covered up with snook. I saw hundreds, caught much fewer. Probably ended up with a couple dozen fish from 15 to 25 inches. They are eating small stuff. I was throwing a size 4 glass minnow imitation. I'm not sure about St. Pete, but if you cross the Skyway and fish the beaches just south of and up to Longboat Pass, I have had good snook fishing there in the past. You want to stay up from the wash. The fish are going to be right on the beach in the first trough and in the wash. 20lb fluoro if the water is clear. I like to fish it on rising water. Good luck.

I just got back and if your going to fish the cut and off to the beach, fish the last two hours of the falling tide, look for grey shadows, and use a black 1/4 DOA jighead, with an Arkansas Glow DOA paddle tail. You can buy them at 6920 Gulf Boulevard Gulf to Bay Bait and Tackle. There is a beautiful 5'4" blonde working in there. Just tell her how pretty she is. Good back up plan when the fish don't bite. We fished the residentials but got very little love around the docks, but we had no moon. The residential ramps close at 11:00 pm sharp and they love to write tickets. We put in with kayaks before the toll booth going to the Fort. The ramp on the Fort is huge and just after the toll booth. Here are a few pics from Friday and Saturday.
