Latest, greatest UW cameras for yaking

Post by Apalach »

As some of you know, I have been a big fan of carrying a reliable point and shoot UW (underwater) camera when yaking. I am especially a fan of these cameras if they can focus down to 1 cm or so for getting great close-ups of DIY parts or fixes, or marine critters of all kinds and sizes. Even though these rigs tend to be a bit pricey ($200-250), for me if you catch a prize fish, but can’t document it, then it takes away from the whole experience. The first pic below shows my submergence test with a key float for my Pentax Optio W10 (now up to model number W60 or so).

The second pic shows the clearance of the hardware inside the hull of my Hobie Sport.

The third pic shows a closeup of a needlefish head and my Mirrolure Catch 2000, Series III lure. Note the fine choppers in the needlefish jaw that can give quite a bite when you are least expecting it.

Finally, here is a link to some of the recent UW cameras that have proven to be great for yak fishing and shallow diving. BTW, I have used Adorama for some years now and can vouch for their honesty and reliability.

P.S. The direct link to the article on underwater cameras seems to be corrupted, so try going to the Adorama section on "Buy the right equipment" and then scrolling down to the UW camera article. I have re-submitted the link 4 times, but each time it gets screwed up--sorry 'bout that.

The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.

For an excellent review, check out Steve's digicams for just abut everything out there that is water resistant and/or waterproof:

I just bought one like yours, Apalach. It looks like a awesome camera. I am hoping it will be here on Saturday, for our first Kayak trip at St. Marks.
