Fishing Spoons...
The New Captain Mike spoon that Cairo Trout posted has me thinking about Redfish on a Spoon.
Ive caught them on bait, top water, grubs, gulps but never consistently on a spoon.
Next trip I'm committing to one for at least two hours of time on the water.
So a few questions
1.Snap swivel or not?
2. Fluoro Leader or not?
3. Trailer like bass fishing?
4. Colors? I know gold is the gold standard!
Speed? techniques?

Re: Fishing Spoons...
Swivel on the spoon and a swivel on the leader at the main line. Some of the redfish tournament guys recommend this set up. It changes the action to be better noticed by the redfish.
WHOSE FISH IS IT?
Re: Fishing Spoons...
I go with Reel Cowboy. Definitely the swivel. About three weeks ago, I lost two by by tying the line to the split ring. Knot worked around the split ring and lost the spoons. first time it had ever happened to me. I don't use a swivel at the main line. Just back to back uni-knots.
I used to use a short piece of red pork rind on johnson spoons but never could tell it helped. may have made the spoon run flatter if anything. Does definitely help when fishing around lily pads in fresh water for bass.
Gold ,chartreuse and pink for the colors.
I bought some of the new ones last week from SGO's but havent' tried them yet. Last time I went to the flats all I took for tackle was a box of spoons and several topwater plugs. Not a soft plastic in the boat. Caught some short trout and nice reds.

I have always just tied to my flouro leader. I like a wobble type motion. Lots of fish caught this way.

I do the same. I Catch plenty of fish with the wooble action. I tie straight to a 15# flouro seagar leader.

Re: Fishing Spoons...
What ever setup you decide on, try a loop knot at the spoon. That lets the spoon do it's thang

I tie my leader to a split ring. If the spoon doesn't come with one I add one.
Leader to mainline connection has a swivel whenever Im fishing a spoon.
I have been using 20 or 25lb floro leader.

Re: Fishing Spoons...
Looks like folks fish them lots of differnt ways...my preferred method below
----the slower the better. Sometimes if you stop them fish will pick them up off the bottom.bman wrote: So a few questions
1.Snap swivel or not?-----no, just a barrel swivel to connect leader in Mainline. I don't use a knot b/c they do have tendency to twist line if reeled too quickly
2. Fluoro Leader or not?----yes, if reeling slow enough you'll catch some oysters
3. Trailer like bass fishing?----No
4. Colors? I know gold is the gold standard!----they all work
Speed? techniques?

Re: Fishing Spoons...
I tie flouro to the split ring. The split ring is like a loop knot. I use those willow leaf blade spoons like the Capt Mike spoon because the water I fish in is very shallow and the CM spoon does not have to be retrieved as fast as a Johnson Gold spoon design. However, if your comfortable using the Johnson design spoon and you catch fish then good to hear that works for you. I also think its pretty easy to retrieve a CM spoon, just fast enouogh to keep it off the bottom.
