St. Marks 8-22

Post by konrad »

On Friday I looked at the tides, low was at 10am and then noticed we were going to have a west, northwest wind. This is my ideal conditions for reds so I called up my dad and we decided to give it a shot. We got down to the lighthouse at 7am. It was a great morning. The temp was around 65 and hardly a cloud in the ski. We proceeded to head east along the shore to a creek on the other side of Palmetto Island. The tide was going out pretty strong. At the entrance to one of the creeks there is a sharp turn with a deep hole. When I have an outgoing tide I like to anchor up in the outside of it and cast pieces of cut pinfish. I use 8lb class spinning tackle with a 3’ piece of floro carbon leader tied to a 3odd circle hook. The key is to cast your bait up current of the hole and let it drift through as naturally as possible. When the tide drops like this all the fish that have been up in the creek have to come out and sure enough they were there. We spent about 2 hours on this hole and caught several trout, 3 of which were around 20 inches. We also caught 11 reds. The smallest was 25 and the largest 30 inches. Once the tide started to bottom out we poled out the mouth of the creek and onto the flats looking for tailing reds. We like to stay within a foot of water. Just enough to keep the boat from bottoming out. On the way out we picked up another 5 or 6 reds in the 26 inch area. All the fish were released and we called it a day at 11:15.
