Keaton Beach 9/19/09

Post by Breambuster »

Ddb and I put the boat in at a little before 8 am. With very little water movement in the next 3 hours (low tide was at 9 am) and not much wind, we decided to try running deeper to see what's out there. Found a piece of real estate in 21' water so we decided to drop anchor to see if anyone is home. The grunts were there as expected. We were catching them consistently for an hour, keeping a few and throwing back some of the smaller one, and then my jig with a pinfish took off. Ended up being a 33.5'' catfish. (here's Calvin with the catch)
Image

Not long after, Dave had a massive hit and this fish was heading to St. Marks.
Image

The grueling process of give and take took more than half an hour, thinking for sure he had a big cobia on but then we saw the deep color and that long tail.
Image

Didnt think them big boys came in this close. This thing must be 8-9' long and likely more than 200lb.
Image

Dave was beat by then, so we ran back inshore to 5' water with trout in our mind. However, Dave apparently was still in offshore mode.
Image

To his credit, he did put a few nice trout in the box for the next 3 hours, including this 22' fattie.
Image

The water temperature inshore was 81 degree, so the trout should be in their fall pattern soon. The fish were there and bitting aggressively but with the 5 mph west wind and a strong outgoing tide, we were drifting at a blazing speed of 0.2 knots. We were practically sitting still most of the time. But we did ended up with a mess of fish.
Image

I always like sesame seared yellowfin tuna so thought why not giving the catfish loin a try. It was not as good as tuna but still very eatable. The pieces that were still raw in the middle were tasting better than the fully cooked ones.

Glad yall got a few, good ta see that fishing is picking up at Keaton. We like eating big sailcats, they eat better cut in small pieces and fried brown. tried one on the grill once and it was kinda rubbery.

Good morning BB and thanks for the report.

I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts and description of what a "fall pattern" for trout would be in your opinion.

Thanks again for your reports, when I see one from you, I always pay attention

Is it just me or does that "catfish" resemble a cobia?

If that's a cat,, its a world record,, can't be a sailcat, they don't have spikes on their back!!!!
boy, if the gamewarden sees this it will be a pretty stiff fine, as this fish is not 33" to the fork..
they have ways of measuring from just a picture... I would take this off asap..
wonder,, did they keep that " Spotted sea bass" too???????

Glad I do not fish with you. If that is a cobia, it is every bit of legal. The only sad part is hearing he did not think it tasted great from first bite to last.
Breambusters' kid has more fishing knowledge than you.

Sir reel, when the water starting to cool off in the fall, the trout will start to hang out in the shallow flats and eventually run up the river and creeks. They will have one thing in mind - gorging themselves before it gets too cold. In fact, Ddb and I was out in Keaton again today and we limited on trout out in 4' water in less than 3 hours (didnt bring the camera, so no report). They were bitting fast and furious when we found them.

They do look like a big catfish in the water. Read my post again, carefully this time. No need to measure your coolers. BTW, that catfish didnt have any whiskers but did have a lots of spikes on its back :-D and that mango, errr... "spotted seabass" was 12''.

Well, after putting my 2 identical coolers together and pulling out the measuring tape, I got just a tad under 30".
straighten out the fish, it would probably make the 33 1/2",, and I am now having lunch on those words I posted!!! :smt006 Sorry..
I will need to read between the lines more carefully from now on. didn't realize that the "catfish" you were describing, actually was referring to a Ling...
Back in the 70's, we targeted cobe's many a day, and have caught some real bruisers. biggest was in the 70lb range.
most folks back then referred to them as "trash fish". I say smacky, smacky, grilled or fried. :lick: the lateral line is very distinctive and pretty strong tasting. we usually remove the darkest sections.
