Evinrude stuck in forward

Post by flatpicker »

Anybody have any idea what would cause my motor gear shift to be stuck in forward. Our local outboard mechanic had surgery, and will be out for another two weeks, and I want to go fishing  . It's a early 80's model.

Drop the foot oil and see what it looks like. I would still look at the linkage good and make sure a pivot point hasent froze up

ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SHAFT GOING TO THE GEARS IN THE FOOT THERE IS A SMALL PLATE, ABOUT1 1/4" BY 2 1/2# WITH 2 SCREWS HOLDING THE PLATE ON THE SHAFT. TAKE THE PLATE OFF AND LOOK INSIDE, THERE IS ANOTHER BRACKET , BRASS, WITH 2 3/8" BOLTS, SEE IF EITHER OF THOSE BOLTS ARE TIGHT, IF THEY ARE WILL HAVE TO GO ANOTHER ROUTE. IF THEY ARE LOOSE, TURN THE PROP A LITTLE AT A TIME WHILE LOOKING AT THE BRACKET, IF THE SOLID 3/16 TH " ROD DROPS DOWN OR UP TIGHTEN THE BOLTS AND THEN CHECK IF IT WILL COME OUT OF GEAR, I BELIEVE ON THOSE OLDER MODELS THEY HAVE SEVERAL GREASE FITTINNGS ON THE TILLER SHAFT THAT NEED GREASED AT LEAST 2 TIMES A YEAR OR WHEN THE SHAFT STARTS GETTING HARD TO TURN. IT COOULD ALSO BE THE DOG GEAR IN THE FOOT ASSEMBLY. CHECK THE OIL IN THE FOOT IF IT IS MILKY YA NEED TO DO A FOOT ASSSEMBLY WITH NEW BEARINGS ,SHIMMS , GASKET SET, AND O RINGS ON THE SHAFT. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO DO IF YOU HAVE A REPAIR MANUEL, JUST BE SURE EVERYTHING GOES BACK IN THE SAME WAY IT CAME OUT.
