NFGFC October Meeting Recap and Pictures

Post by k8show »

If you missed last night's meeting, you missed out on a lot of great information (and fabulous prizes). We broke into three groups and had speakers take turns talking with us.

Junior Dice showed us his no longer top secret lure arsenal. I am taking his suggestion and fishing both a popping cork (one of the fat ones with an 18" leader) and a chug bug tomorrow. Junior emphasized that your chug bug needs a "frizzle" on the tail for best results.

He told us a loop knot will increase top water strikes 50% since it will give the plug more dog-walking action on the water.

Matthew Jacobs showed us some awesome rods that he made. Why didn’t I take a picture of the one with the snakeskin covered handle!? I guess I was too mesmerized by its beauty to think. Seriously, it’s amazing. He told us a lot of interesting information too. Did you know that smaller eyelets help you throw your lure farther? If you spray salt-x on your rods and wipe the eyelets, they’ll last a lot longer. Since I love economics, I was especially interested when Matthew told us about split grip rods: they’re a result of a decrease in the supply of cork. Brazil and Portugal over harvested their cork trees putting upward pressure on the price of cork and giving rod producers an incentive to create more split grip rods. These have an advantage of looking cool and being lighter than grips made entirely of cork.

Jeff Trent gave us good advice to help our reels last longer.

First of all, don’t just rinse your reel under the hose for 2 seconds. So the freshwater gets in and gets out the salt, be sure to wind the reel under the faucet for a minute or so. Jeff also showed us how to clean spinning reels and bait casters. He said we shouldn’t be afraid to take them apart for cleaning; use reel oil (3 in 1 is ok, but not ideal); never use WD-40, and don’t over oil the bearings. One drop of oil is enough. Too much oil isn’t good.

Here are the raffle pictures. One more hour until the weekend, friends; you can do it. See you all tomorrow!

Everybody that was there seemed to have a great time, I know I did.
Thanks for the kind words and the great recap Katie.
