10/3 Tournament report

Post by captkeyser »

Registered at the Ecky and made our way back West to launch at the St. Marks Ft. The river was glass :smt007 as we scooted on down to the mouth. We headed South from the river mouth to our first spot to see if we could take care of our slot fish before we went after mister red. Spot 1 produced 6 trout all on topwater before 8:30am, needless to say we were quite pleased as we made the loooooong idle into the shallows. Hadn't fished our Red spot in over 5mths so it was hit or miss, they would either be there or not.

Killed the motor and plopped the trolling motor down and began scanning for tails. After about 15mins intense eye pealing we began to get the uneasy feeling. They should be here??? Another 5mins goes by and my partner spots a tail about 75yrds off. Kick the trolling motor in full speed and positioned the boat for the cast. The spook landed about 10ft behind the red and began the retrieve. As the plug came zig zagging above the fish he turned on it, with shoulders out of the water he pounced. Fish on! Boated the fish, 28"s :smt010 but boy was it healthy.

Continued on and found some more tails. The second fish came to the boat and measured 26 and 15/16ths. We thought we had it in the bag and moved on in hunt of a big trout. :smt004

About and hour later my partner lands a 23" trout which was nice but we knew that it wouldn't cut it as our slot fish were nothing to brag about. We moved on to the West and I hook a whopper back in a creek. Loose the fish at the boat :smt009 and decide at this point that it was time to go.

With confidense in our Red we make our way back to the Ecky. At the scales Mr. Red didn't quite pull the weight we thought he would and placed second. There were some really nice stringers and the weigh in went as smooth as could be. Thanks Casey and all the others that made this tournament possible. It was just a wonderful day on the water and I look forward to doing it again soon. :smt006
