Red trout Shootout from the Andros Backwater

Post by WaltDawg »

Bill and I headed down to the coast Thursday night hoping that the weatherman was lying about the cold front and 20+ winds. We fished for a few hours Friday but mainly wanted to get an idea of what the tides were going to look like. The wind was coming pretty good out of the west, so the incoming tide behaved like it was supposed to. We were hesitant to fish much, but we really couldn't help ourselves.

Bill started off throwing topwater and got the skunk off the boat.

Once the tide came in, we got close and I landed a nice trout and followed with a red that was a hair below 27.

If the tournament had been Friday, we would have ended up with 11 and a half pounds, but we knew the conditions were going to be tough on Saturday.

Friday night the wind was howling and it wasn't much different the next morning.

We get on the water at first light and the wind wasn't bad as long as we stayed near shore. Around 7:00, the tide was really low and didn't come in until the afternoon. We fished hard early and landed a few keeper trout, but they were barely keepers. Had a few blowups throughout the day, but they never seemed to be on target.

The highlight of my day came in the afternoon when we were fishing the shoreline looking for reds. The water was pretty clear, so I could see fish as long as they were on sandy bottom. I see this guy and run a spoon right past his nose and he lunged for it. He put up a nice fight on light tackle.

We had a blast even though we didn't place. Congrats to the winners and congrats to everybody that fished in spite of the lousy conditions.

Saw the boat out in front of CQ's looked nice! We (family) were down at Fisherman's wife during weigh in having some hot soup after being out in the bay wind. Daughter caught a nice 19 inch grouper and that was all the fishing we did! wish I could have fishe d the tourny but the big boat isnt much of a flats fisher:)

Way to break in a new boat!!!! Walt.... looks like you'll have to come down to Uncle Dan's and give a class in the back yard on how to catch redfish.
When I'm fighting a keeper, the Afterburner is TURNED ON!!!!
