10-24-09 Krissi Flatt Tournament Results

Post by Jumptrout51 »

Butch and I left Taylorville at 5 a.m. headed to Carrabelle for the 2nd annual Krissi Flatt Foundation Tournament. Stopped at Coastal Restaurant in Panacea for breakfast at 6 a.m. The waitress brought our drinks and took our order. Mine 2 eggs over easy sausage grits and toast. Butch asked about the ham hoping for country cured ham. Not to be. He asked about the bacon. The waitress said "the local guys at the table behind us thought the bacon came from a boar hog" and added "it didn't bother her", she liked it.
He ordered sausage.
We get to Carrabelle a little past 7 and launch at C-Quarters. The wind was steady out of the N.E. but nothing like last weekend.
Out on the flats there was a good ripple on the water, perfect for topwater baits.
We had fished less than 30 minutes when I get slammed on a Super Spook about 10 feet from the boat. The 4.16 pound trout made every effort to get under the boat in the shallow water and escape. Luckily she was going under the back side of the boat which allowed us to drift over the fish and pull her up.
Butch made a quick pass with the net and our first fish of the day is in the box. We fish on and around as many bars and sand holes as well could find picking up several upper slot trout.
We keep scanning the dropping tide looking for tailing red fish. About 1:30 p.m. and still redfishless,Trouttrent calls to see what we have caught. When I told him of not seeing a single red all day he suggest a place he and Casey found some upper slot reds the week before.
Thirty minutes later Butchs' gold spoon hits a brick wall. The brick wall starts taking drag. After several heart pounding runs the 26 and 3/4 inch red reluctantly comes toward the boat. The red didn't know how close he was to escaping. There was only one hook of the treble set barely piercing the outer lip. One more good run and it probably would have won.
The 6.89 red was good for 1st place red while the 4.16 trout took 1st place trout.

Back at the weigh in while everyone was enjoying fresh fish and shrimp from Coastal Restaurant the tournament committee held a prize raffle drawing. I won a nice AL AGNEW fishing shirt and Butch won a PENN spinning rod/reel combo.

Those days you don't catch fish there isn't much to tell.
Like the day you and I fished in acres and acres of trout and reds. :smt005
