St. Marks 11-4-09
Fished East of the lighthouse today with Trouttrent. We caught a lot of nice trout. We caught 25 plus grouper to 21 inches on grubs.
We fished a number of his holes and only caught short fish. All the big keepers came off my holes.

Re: St. Marks 11-4-09
Jeff Trent picked me up at 8 a.m. for a trout trip out of Aucilla today. When we passed over the Newport bridge we changed plans. There was no water in the St. Marks river. We knew there would be less at Aucilla. We took a right and went to the lighthouse ramp knowing we would have to wait for water.
Sure enough. Got to the ramp to witness the lowest amount of water in the lighthouse basin that I can remember in 60 years.
The tide had turned and was rising. We had to wait about 1 hour for enough the get the boat off the trailer.
The wind forecast was for 15 knots out of the NE. It was barely a good breeze. Not even enough to keep the no seeums away.
We motored out to the SM entrance marker and beelined for a spot 7 miles down. This hole is usually 10-12 feet deep. We measured 4 feet of water on it. The short grouper were stacked up around the rocks there. We managed a coupe nice trout off it. We then hole hoped around the area picking up more short grouper and a occassional keeper trout.
Five hours of fishing gave us a box full of good trout and rockbass.
The wind never got above 5 mph in spite of the forecast. It was a beautiful day for throwing topwater baits.
The rising tide and the outgoing wind gave you plenty of time to fish a hole thoroughly.

Sounds like a good day to me.

I can attest to the water level at St. Marks Lighthouse recently, it has been horribly low. When we went last Sunday, we got there around 7:30 and waited until almost 9:15 to put in...

Our flats water level is about a foot and a half lower this time of year versus Spring and Summer.

I got there at 8am and the tide was low but I did get the boat off the trailer but had to use the trolling motor to get out of the channel.
