11/14/09 Mid-shore report

Post by big bend gyrene »

Trips have been few and far between this year, but earlier trips this year were highly productive.

For the most part, today was a different story. Did NOT drag in any big keeper fish, but still want to share info for those of you aiming to get out for whatever it might be worth.

Trolled in areas of Saint Marks reef and Wakulla reef in the morning with only two lizardfish to show for it. Ran east a few miles and landed one short gag. Having watched many boats give up on the nearshore bite and head out, mid-afternoon I did the same heading out closer to 30' due south. Finally found fish, just not the ones we wanted. Few short grouper, but mainly black sea bass mixed in with a few pink mouth grunts, big sand perch, puffers, and one small flounder. Biggest surprise of the day was a decent sized octopus. Would have run even deeper but had lost too much daylight. Aside from cooling temps, not a good snorkeling day as we saw large jellyfish every spot we went.

Looking on the bright side, boat ran well, lots of fish at the last spot of the day (even if small), and light enough winds to boat WOT all day, with a gorgeous sunset to end the day. Didn't fill the freezer, but did get the blessing of admiring God's handiwork all day long. :D

Glad you had a good one... I caught a house but I'd have loved to be on the water!
