Flustering Day Saturday

Post by DeanMac »

As I mentioned in my introduction, I had been looking for a boat.

I had a prospect purchased stopped a couple weeks. It was a 2005 Sea Chaser 1950 with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke, Alum Trailer, T-Top, I first saw it on e-bay then on Craigslist. The pictures looked nice and the info the guy told me sounded ok. It was about 250 miles from where I live and I didn't want to go that distance unless I was pretty sure of making the purchase. The owner got it from a repo auction so I already knew there would be alot of unanswered if's if I got this boat. The guys price was $8500.

Well I was going to take off a day of work last Tuesday to go check it out, the guy called last Sunday and said he took it out and it was skipping and he thought it had water in gas and would get it fixed and call me. Well, I got a call on Thursday that his mechanic pumped the gas tank and replaced the filters and it was ready to go. He would take it for a test run that afternoon. So Friday I went to the bank and got a bank check for the purchase and changed my schedule to make the trip. I went up Saturday to buy the boat, 240 miles one way, I left home at 6 AM.

I got there the boat looked pretty good, of course not as good as the pictures. A lesson I have learned.
It ran find on a hose and went into gear easy. Interior and hull looked fine, but boat was bare, I would have to get all the normal accessories.

So lets go take a little trip up the lake.

It still was skipping a little, especially when you gave it the gas to start off to plane. The guy kept saying it just needed to be ran a little. I could tell by the look on his face he didn't test it out as he said he would. I must of tried at least a dozen starts and it was skipping every time. Ran it at least 45 minutes. Needless to say I was not a happy camper.

Probably nothing major, but I didn't want to buy something and take it straight to the shop for reparts.

It just really ticked me off that he told me it was fixed and I wasted the day and drove 480 miles and came back empty handed. The guy got mad when I didn't buy it and kept saying he had a couple people that wanted it. I sure hope they take it for a test ride and not buy it from running in the driveway.

I guess another lesson in life. LOL

So as a couple mentioned on my first thread, BE PATIENT!!!!!, since I don't really have anything else lined up I am going to try and chill and wait for a good deal to come alone.

So if anyone sees a good boat, Please let me know.

Dean

Sorry to hear that. I should make my own post, but I to took a boat out for a test drive this weekend, although I didn’t have to drive as far. Anyway this boat also has a Yamaha 115 4stroke. Took it for a test drive on the river and made it about 3 or 4 miles when I went to turn around and nothing. I thought it maybe out of gas, but it still had over ¼ of a tank. Pumped up the bulb and she ran for about a ½ of a mile or so and she died again. This time she wasn’t starting. Used the trolling motor to try to make it to the closest landing made it about a ¼ of a mile or so and the batteries went dead. Tried the big motor again and finally got it to start but barley. A couple of pumps on the bulb every 30 seconds or so and she would idle enough to get us to the landing. Made it to the closest landing where I called a friend to come pick me up and take me to my truck. Got it on dry land and took the cover off and there was oil coming out of the intake. Looks like neither of us had a good time with our test drive this weekend.

Jadams Sounds like your experience was worse, but mine cost more since I had to drive farther. LOL

115 Yamaha, I had heard those were great motors, I guess two strikes on our two experiences.

We need to start a thread, boats for sale "Buyer be ware" and list the ad,
