The rut is on! -- Jefferson County **More Pics**

Post by dolphinatic »

Well, today was an exciting one. I went and worked for a bit, then decided to run a few much needed errands. One of which was to drop off a doe for processing that I shot Friday morning after Thanksgiving. It had been sitting on ice for a few days in the cooler. So, I loaded up the cooler and headed to Monticello towards the end of the day. Dropped off the deer, 2nd one already  , and decided to head up to the property to trim a few limbs and position a new stand for the upcoming weekend. About 3:30pm, I decided to walk down to another stand facing a grown up field on the other side of the property. It was an overcast afternoon and just looked good for sitting in a tree  I rarely sit in the afternoon, but thought I would give it a try today. I had been sitting for about 45 minutes or so and was quite comfy enjoying watching the squirrels and feeling the cool breeze with just a little mist. Then out of nowhere, I hear a CRASH coming through the brush behind me. Before I knew it, a doe emerged in full stride about 20 yards from the stand to my right. Right behind her was a MASSIVE buck giving full chase! It happened so fast that all I could do is watch in total amazement as they ran through the field to a group of oaks about 250 yards away :( I lost sight of them and sat there thinking," Oh my goodness...that has to be the biggest buck I have ever seen." It's rack was tall and way outside the ears. My heart was pumping like crazy just seeing it. It was one of those moments where you just have to admire such an awesome looking animal! I set the rifle up on the stand and waited for that "1 in however many chances" that I would see it again. About 15 minutes later, the doe came back into view through the brush about 250 yards away. No sign of the buck. Then, out of nowhere, he appeared and the blood started pumping all over again :o I could hardly keep still watching him. Both deer disappeared into a clump of brush, so I waited....gun still raised.....safety off.....finger on the trigger...and ready to fire. I could hear the buck grunting, but couldn't see either of them. About 10 minutes later, which seemed like an eternity, the doe jumped up and started to run back towards me. No sign of the buck. She got half way across the field and then I caught a glimpse of him :o Did I say what an awesome looking deer this was  ? The doe proceeded to walk within 40 yards of the stand back to right. The buck was VERY cautious, but started to follow, one step at a time. He stopped about 70-80 yards from the stand and stood behind a small green pine. I put the sight on him and pondered taking a shot or just waiting to see what he did next. My eagerness got the best of me and I shot.....right above him :x The pine exploded above him! He just stood there while the doe ran off towards the field. I quickly reloaded the bolt action, and then he ran :smt010 I knew I had just blown my chance....then that sick feeling of disgust began to settle in :smt009 I decided to just sit there and take in what had just happened. I called my Buddy Jeff to tell him what had just happened. As I was talking, a (or the) doe walked out again. Jeff told me to hang up and shoot that sucker if he came back. I looked waaaaay off in the distance amoung the pines and oaks, and there he was. Too far for me to take a shot :smt009 The doe continued to walk across the field. Then, out of nowhere stepped another buck about 120-130 yards away :smt007 Not as big as the "long racked mack daddy", but a nice one still. I put the sight on him and shot. The doe ran......the buck fell  I waited a few minutes and then got down to find him in the brush. Along the way, I spooked up another small deer. I found the 9 pt. buck with a nice shot right to the neck  Man, I love the 22/250 :-D

Kudos to Rocket for the use of the trailer to haul it off to the processor

(This picture was my feeble attempt to load him into the truck by myself...not the Geo bman :smt005 )

Thats 3 deer now in 15 days.....might be time to give them a break and try to go catch a fish
