Kayaks stolen from kids camp

14 kayaks were stolen from outside Blackcreek Outfitters in Jacksonville and they belong to a kids camp. Here is a description so keep a look out for them on Craigslist or other places locally.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Workers at Black Creek Outfitters in the St. Johns Town Center were shocked to find someone had broken in and stolen something they weren't trying to sell.

Someone swiped 13 kayaks outside the store. The kayaks were used for teaching children in the community.

"Anybody in retail's had theft. You've either had break-ins or snatch-and-grabs or just shoplifting," said Joe Butler, owner of Black Creek Outfitters. "But this kind of hurts a little bit. This is a kids camp activity."

The thieves broke through a chain, and since then the owner has put on a more secure chain up.

"I think it's pretty gutsy to come in here and take 12-, 13-foot boats at the 13-, 14-count level at one time," said Keith Keller, an instructor for the children's camp.

Butler said someone must have stolen the kayaks after 6 p.m. Sunday.

"Probably while we were having our Christmas party, which is about a mile away from here," Butler said.

The store hopes the theft doesn't ruin its programs with the children. It hopes to get the kayaks back, and employees will be on the lookout for them.

"We're going to be looking anywhere we can look," Keller said. "We'll be checking Craigslist. I've notified a number of the guy-delivery services from St. Augustine to Amelia Island."

To help our local and regional friends to keep an eye out, I thought that I could help by describing the boats that were stolen, so here it goes:

Early Perception/Aquaterra Spectrum S's- a light touring boat for smaller people{ kids}.

2 purple

Early Perception/ Aquaterra Umiak {they are now called the Carolina S}.
2 purple
3 yellow
Early Perception/ Aquaterra Spectrum 14 Adult size Loden Green front and rear hatches with rudder.

Necky Gannett 2 Tandem w/ rudder yellow
If anyone happens to see or knows of the whereabouts of these boats please call Keith or Joe or anyone at

The funny thing is, that these kayaks will only fit really small adults and kids under 90 lbs. The Tandem and the 14 Spectrum are full sized compatable. I feel that they should show up somewhere when the thieves realize how small they actually are! This one should go down in the back of the Folio in the stupid criminals version of News of the Weird.
