Carrabelle Grouper Fishing. 12/21 and 12/22
Bouyweather report finally looked good for Monday afternoon and Tuesday. Got a late start on Monday as the winds were going to lay as the day went on. Started catching live bait on a ballast rock pile in Ballast Cove. An hours of bait fishing produced about 20 live baits, but as I was planning on trolling thought that was plenty. Headed out the pass and was greeted by a very minor chop. When you can run 30mph in a bay boat in East Pass it should be a nice trip. Put out the Stretch 30s in 40 ft of water to try the first trough. No action from the fish or the rod tips.
Lines crossed. I'm way out of practice as I have not trolled for grouper in almost a year, dadgumit. Head toward my second spot and one rod goes off and a barely legal gag goes in the box/
After another hour I notice that one of the rods is acting strange, grab it and feel the tug of a nice grouper
Stop the boat to start fighting the fish. It feels like I've been reeling for a 1/2 hour before I get to my 150 ft mark. As I get the fishing where I start to see color, BAM, One big run and the grouper is unbuttoned
The hooks on the lure are fine sooooo what gives? As I start to let the lure back out i notice the clicker won't stay engaged. That's why There was so much line out and why I lost the fish. I must have been trolling the hooked grouper for some time and his last surge pulled the hook I promise to watch the rod tip more closely. About 10 minutes later another grouper on, good fight and into the boat comes a 12lb, on the boca, gag
Pull the other strtch 30 in as I have my one man gag limit. Try some red grouper spots to be greated by a swarm of 16 in red grouper. must have caught 12 on 15 drops. Head back to the hill at 30mph. Great day on the water and a pretty good catch. Fish were cayght in 55 to 65 ft. Red and white stretch 30's. Tried Tuesday but no love until we started bottom fishing with live bait. In about an hour we caught 17 small red grouper and 5 endangered red snapper to 10lbs. Still a great day on the water if not for the dinner table! Merry Christmas !
