I got several raccoon road kill tails I want to work on. One tip, tho. Trim the hair off the tail instead of throwing the whole tail in a zip lock bag. There's still enough flesh there to rot and whew, does it stink after a few weeks.

Skin the tail back as far as you can and pack it with salt...but it still stanks ....the store bought deer tails I have stank

i got all the tail and the back 20 team borix takes most of the smell out a lot better than salt

Stop at one of the deer processors and you can get all the tails and hide you want..And 20 mule team borax is a good preservative if you can find it..
