Evinrude 3hp
I bought a 1966 Evinrude lightwin Model 3602e 3hp outboard from a buddy today for $25. The motor looks ok but not great. He said a few months ago they had it running but it would bog down under a load. I got it home today and can't get it to crank. is it worth putting any money in this little motor? I haven't paid him yet because he said to wait and make sure I want to keep it. People on the internet seem to be nuts over this little motor saying it is one of the best small outboards that Evinrude ever produced. Anybody familiar with these? Is it worth having carb rebuilt an try to use on my 13 foot Gheenoe?

That's a classic! Even if you don't ever run it would look great displayed on a saw horse or old work table next to some older rods, a couple chewed-up Lucky 13s, Shakespeare President reel, cooter shell hat, old wooden cricket box, Pal-o-mine, hula popper, hand cut white oak paddle, etc. Of course the display must include a 60s Herter's catalogue.

Get it running on the Gheenoe and name her "Dave's Belle."

Chances are on a motor of that age it is probably something in the ignition, like points or something easy. Those are motors you can work on. As for the carb it should also be very straight forward since it is prior to all of the crap they put on em today. If it has good compression ( which it probably does) I would say fix it they run for about 100 years so that one is just broke in.

Re: Evinrude 3hp
I bought an old Johnson 4 HP a few years back and had the same symptoms you described. After a new plug and fresh gas, symptoms continued. I pulled the gas tank off and cleaned thoroughly, along with replacing the fuel line and spraying the carb with sea foam. The old fuel/oil had gummed up and was not allowing enough flow under a load. Not saying this is your problem, but definitely worth a try. My 4 has been running ever since. Moves the 13 gheenoe right along.

You can't push 33' Contender with a 3 hp motor. I doubt you could even use it to slow troll. Give it to me and I'll dispose of it properly.

you can sell it to me ...I will give you $50 and I am closer and I won't ask for a repeat customer discount....

I have a 58 model 3hp Lightwin. Great little motor for trolling and should be an easy fix. I'd say 25 bucks is probably a steal. Rebuild the carb and replace the points and plugs and you may have another 50 bucks in it. Probably will need a new impeller too. Basic new old motor maintenance. Enjoy.
