Lower unit fluid change-

Post by Redfin »

Changed lower unit oil today. The lower magnetic plug had a very small amount of tiny metal bits on it. Almost not visible so small, but defiantly there. (total metal was less than a grain of rice????)
Is that normal to have a little bit? Also is it normal for the old fluid to be black from usage?

I also did the motor oil change, a 150 Yamaha 4-Stroke. How the hell do you all drain he old oil? I used a hand pump[ fluid extractor from Harbor Freight- not very efficient-
I will be ordering this- http://www.simyamaha.com/Mityvac_p/mv-07400.htm

Redfin, What you describe about your lower unit is normal. If your LU oil is real black you may want to change it a little more often! There is a drain plug for the engine oil sump inside the short black hose that comes out the back of the mid section. Then just use the wiki.answers method.
