St. Marks Redfish 2/16/10 (of course it not a tourney day)

Post by Jhults11 »

My buddy jeremy and i snuck out early this morning in hopes of sight fishing for some reds. The wind was blowing but not too too bad. We made it to our 1st area out of the wind inside and island to be greeted with tailing reds everywhere. They were spooky as crap though. Jeremy was in the process of getting on the poling platform and one slide tick of the boat sent the school of 12-15 fish scattering. Annoying but we pushed on. About 20 minutes later jeremy casted to a nice tailing red in about 10" of water and he acted like he was going to eat but just swiped at it and ran. Over the next 3 hours we saw about 30-40 reds in schools of 4-7 fish per school. All very spooky and reluctant to hit in that cold shallow stuff. Finally we moved into a creek and went in search for a long 45 minutes w/0 seeing a fish. We were discouraged and about to head out when I spotted and monster tail in the air next to an oyster bar feeding. Jeremy let me have the honers and I placed my Go To New Penny 3" Shrimp about 3 feet off his head. He turned on a dime and smoked it. The fight was on and about 8 runs later and some breath holding, Jeremy scooped the toad into the net. After a round of high fives we thought he was gonna be to big so we hurried to measure him. He went 26.75". Holy crap...where is this guy on tourney day..lol..guess how that goes. We kept him and on the way back to tally we stopped at jerrys and weighed him on the official scale. He went 6.75 lbs! Man on Man, one of the bigger ones i have caught in a while. We had a blast and hope to do it again reel soon. If yall get out there..head east and head shallow..fish everywhere...but be very very very quiet! Tight lines.......here are some pics......
