Steering cable help
I installed a jack plate on a friend’s boat and the steering cable needs to be longer. Where is the best place to get one? Also what is the proper way to measure the old cable?

Re: Steering cable help
The best way is to remove the old one and measure it...too long can be an issue....also tie a rope to the end of the old one...it will help pull the new one. I would go ahead and replace the helm - just buy the kit (cable and helm) I had some issues with mine - originally thought it was from prop torque, but now I think it was the old helm and new cable. http://www.bigbendfishing.net/phpBB3/vi ... jack+plate

Re: Steering cable help
Ok I measured the old one (the black part only) and it is 9ft. When I measure the boat like they say in the directions it comes to 12ft. Dose that sound right? I know it is going to be longer but 3ft. TC the hydro steering sounds good, but it is more than he is willing to spend. This is the type that is on the boat now. I found the whole kit for $141.00 + shipping is that a good deal?

Re: Steering cable help
What length can/did you order? I want to say I ordered an additional two foot and it was almost too much extra to deal with.

Re: Steering cable help
I ordered a 13 foot steering kit and got it in yesterday. It works, but it could be a little shorter. I made it work and took it out on the water today. The jack plate, steering cable, gauge worked very well. Thanks for the help, and hope to see you on the water.

Re: Steering cable help
I ended up getting the steering cable from.http://www.wholesalemarine.com , and last night I found a prop for $46.00 on www.iboats.com that will make a good spare. I will try to get some pictures of the project and post them soon
