Re: $6,000,000.00 Turtle Tunnel
HOW STUPID CAN PEOPLE BE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE TURTLES RUN OVER BY CARS AND TRUCKS. YOU CANNOT MAKE ALL OF THE TURTLES USE A TUNNEL EVEN WITH BARRIERS TO DIRECT THEM THROUGH A TUNNEL, YOU CANNOT KILL OFF ALL OF THE TURTLES IN THE STATE EVEN WITH EVERY PERSON IN THE STATE OUT SHOOTING THEM AND TRYING TO RUN OVER THEM. NATURE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF. IF THERE ARE ANY ALLIGATORS LEFT IN FLA., MAYBE 300,000,000 , THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF THE TURTLES. IT WAS NOT TOO LONG AGO WHEN WE HAD TO PROTECT THE ALLIGATOR ACCORDING TO THE GREEN PEACE PEOPLE, IN A MATTER OF 3-4 YEARS WE WERE UP TO OUR NECKS IN ALLIGATORS ALL OVER THE STATE. NOW WE HAVE A BUNCH OF 15-20 FT. LONG SNAKES WE WILL HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF. IF YOU SEE ONE OF THOSE SLIMY LONG SNAKES, JUST SHOOT IT OR CHOP ITS HEAD OFF, IN ABOUT A 100 YEARS WE WILL HAVE AN ALL OUT HUNT TO TAKE CARE OF THE SNAKES, IF WE DON'T THEY WILL BE EATING EVERYBODY THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH. WHEN PEOPLE START MESSING WITH NATURE, THEY WILL HAVE A BIG PROBLEM ON THEIR HANDS. NUF SAID.

Why can't they spend that money for something useful like an "illegals tunnel"? (Leaving and one way of course!)
It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I'm all for helping out the turtles, but.............. 6 million?!? How much does it really cost to put in some culverts and build some little fences to direct turtles towards them?

if there is one person that thinks this is money well spent on a Damn turtle tunnel they need to look in the mirror and then they'll see what the real problem with this country is

That's biggest bunch of garbage I have ever heard of, no wonder this country so jacked up
Re: $6,000,000.00 Turtle Tunnel
First the tunnel is not costing 6 million.red_yakker wrote:I'm all for helping out the turtles, but.............. 6 million?!? How much does it really cost to put in some culverts and build some little fences to direct turtles towards them?
Second the high price is due to the material being used for the barrier.
Third the road will be resurfaced at least in part when the job is completed.
You will notice that they are driving the barrier into the ground yet it is plastic. Very pricey.
If memory serves me correctly the job was budgeted at 5 million and went for around 3 million.
I work in that trade and I agree the money could have went to much better projects but I am very glad that the money at least put some people to work.
Also yes it is a stupid project.
Re: $6,000,000.00 Turtle Tunnel
This is discussing the budget price not the actual price of the tunnel. In the bid the project went for close to 1/2 the bid estimate which was actually 5 million and change. I bid part of that project in my job so I am very familiar with the cost of this job.Jumptrout51 wrote:http://www.conservativeponderment.com/2 ... unnel.html
Companies right now are so hungry for work they are bidding jobs at cost or less to keep people working. I know of SEVERAL jobs that were bid at half or less of the projected budget. While projected budgets are often the high end they are not that high. I was involved in a district meeting in Milton for FDOT and this topic was discussed in detail. All of the discussion was around the bidding of jobs this low and that the contractors cannot survive at these prices long.

So what you are saying is that when things get "back to normal",the citizens will once again get screwed out of millions.

Re: $6,000,000.00 Turtle Tunnel
Dang straight yo! I've never seen a dead turtle there, just one small gator last summer right by the drive. The reason for this is the netting that was placed along the ground by the highway years ago. The turtles can't climb over it. There was no reason for a friggin wall to be built. Can't wait till the gators figure out where all the turtles are being grouped together and have a buffet of cooterTroutTrent wrote:I drive into town and back out that way every work day of the week and have done so for over 15 years I'm not bulls@!ting you when I say I have never once seen a dead Turtle or any other animal for that fact on that mile of roadif there is one person that thinks this is money well spent on a Damn turtle tunnel they need to look in the mirror and then they'll see what the real problem with this country is

Nothing like a dumbazz "project" like this to get Tallahassee some nationwide publicity on the Rush Limbaugh show. It was one of his favorites for blowing stimulus $$$$

No I am saying that the contractors will bid job that have real numbers in them and not bid the job at a loss to keep people working. They are not screwing anyone out of money. If you think you can do it for these prices jump right out there and give it a try.Jumptrout51 wrote:So what you are saying is that when things get "back to normal",the citizens will once again get screwed out of millions.
