Thanks for your response, fishing gal. Caught it between the bird rack and lighthouse at about 6ft. I lost two or three before I boated one. A snappy fighter and lotsa fun.
Cool report. I have caught many pompano in the surf at St. George Island using sand fleas, but never on the flats. One question, when you were on the flats were you on a grass bed or in a sandy area?
It was a grassy bottom, just north of the bird rack sand bar. I was fishing the edges of a 10 sq. yd. patch of floating grass and algae-looking mass. Throwing all kinds of plastic around it without any luck while the little lady started getting hits on live shrimp. I tried the shrimp and pompano started hitting.
Thanks for the response. Your description sounds similar to when I catch flounder on the flats. We usually notice a small sandy area that we went over or a hole or sometimes a muddy area in the middle of clear water. Thanks again, I always learn new stuff on this board.
As much as people study pompano you never know where you'll find one. Two winters ago (January!) I caught a 5 pounder well up a creek just west of the lighthouse on a CT & grub.
???? Yes, tasty.
That's good to hear Rascal. There's been two pomps caught from my boat at St Marks - one over grass on east flats with sure catch shrimp (no cork) and one on west flats with swa over sandy area. Neither were caught by me - so maybe there's hope yet. I know that was exciting!
How do you cook Pompano? I've tried grilling them with some of the same seasoning that I use for Trout and my wife didn't like them much. She thought the meat was too strong and oily?
